At the frontier of food-based innovation, PINE toured the world to research pineapple farming and learn about the life cycle of a pineapple.

In 2018 our journey led to a family owned farm in Beerwah, Queensland, Australia. We saw how the pineapple epitomizes the concept of sustainability. The growers explained how all of the world's pineapples originally grew from only two pineapples. A staggering growth story.

The soil under our feet nourishing the roots, we walked along the symmetrical rows as we listened intently while they demonstrated how the leafy top of the pineapple is rerooted and grown into new pineapples. Its journey starts as a beautiful purple flower cluster, before evolving into what we recognize as a pineapple.

Thriving in tropical climates, pineapples absorb sunlight during the day and grow during the night. A pattern reminiscent of humans.

The grower used a sharp knife to cut through a pineapple leaf, revealing several strong, white, silky fibers. These are the fibers used to create pineapple leather, using the byproduct of existing agriculture where the leaves are otherwise wasted.

Before leaving the farm we had the pleasure of tasting a pineapple freshly cut off the plant. The sweetness melted in our mouths.

A memorable experience of all senses.
